1.2.6 Sign Language (Prerecorded)

Sign language interpretation is provided for all prerecorded audio content in synchronized media.

Last reviewed: September 9, 2026

Understanding 1.2.6

For many Deaf users, a signed language (such as ASL or BSL) is their first or primary language, and written captions in a spoken language are effectively a second-language transcription for them. This AAA criterion provides an interpreter video track so that Deaf sign-language users can access spoken content with the same fluency and nuance as hearing users get from the audio.

How to Meet It

Record or composite a sign-language interpreter video (e.g., picture-in-picture) synchronized with the prerecorded content, and provide a way to toggle or view it alongside the main video. This typically requires working with a qualified sign-language interpreter during production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do captions already satisfy this requirement?

No. Captions and sign language interpretation address different needs: captions serve users who read the spoken-language text, while sign language interpretation serves users whose primary language is a signed language. This is a separate, AAA-level requirement.
