Testing Engine Comparison

AccessiSight vs axe-core

axe-core is an excellent open-source library that teams build into their own tooling. AccessiSight is a ready-made platform: scanning, crawling, reports and remediation guidance out of the box.

axe-core (Testing Engine): A widely used open-source accessibility rules library. If you're evaluating axe-core for accessibility testing or ADA/WCAG compliance work, here's how it compares to AccessiSight across features, cost, and what each is actually built to do.

axe-core

Pros

  • Open source and free
  • Widely adopted ruleset
  • Well-audited, low false-positive core rules

Cons

  • A library, not a platform: reporting, crawling and scheduling are up to you
  • Deliberately focused on DOM-structural checks rather than content-quality or cognitive checks

AccessiSight Advantage

We built our own scanning engine rather than depending on a third-party rules library: more than 400 distinct checks across a core engine, an ARIA-semantics rule group (composite-widget structure, role/attribute validity per WAI-ARIA 1.2) and an NLP/cognitive layer for judgment-based checks (alt-text quality, link purpose, reading level, dark patterns), plus dashboards, scheduled crawls and remediation guidance, with every finding tagged by confidence level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AccessiSight use axe-core under the hood?

No. Our scanning engine is built in-house: a core-rules engine, an ARIA-semantics rule group implementing the WAI-ARIA 1.2 specification directly (composite-widget structure, role and attribute validity), 26 heuristic groups and an NLP/cognitive layer, all running in a real browser via Playwright. Each finding is tagged with a confidence level (high/medium/low) so you can see what's a deterministic DOM-structural violation and what's a content heuristic worth a human look.

Why pay for AccessiSight if axe is free?

axe-core is a free, capable library. Turning it into a service that crawls many pages, stores results, tracks trends over time and produces remediation guidance and reports is engineering work you'd do yourself. AccessiSight provides that as a ready-made platform with its own independent engine.
