1.2.7 Extended Audio Description (Prerecorded)

Extended audio description is provided for all prerecorded video content in synchronized media.

Last reviewed: September 9, 2026

Understanding 1.2.7

Standard audio description must fit inside the existing pauses in a video's dialogue, which isn't always enough time to describe complex visual content. This AAA criterion requires pausing the video itself to insert additional narration when needed, ensuring blind and low-vision users get a complete description of important visual information rather than an abbreviated one.

How to Meet It

Where standard audio description (1.2.5) cannot fit all necessary narration into existing pauses, edit the video to insert extra pauses (extending its overall runtime) so the expanded description can be recorded and played back in full. Provide this as an alternate 'described version' of the video.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is standard audio description (1.2.5) not enough, requiring this instead?

When a scene has too much essential visual information to describe within the natural gaps in dialogue (for example, a dense montage or an on-screen document the viewer is expected to read), extended audio description gives the narrator room to describe it by pausing the video.
