2.4.8 Location

Information about the user's location within a set of web pages is available.

Last reviewed: September 9, 2026

Understanding 2.4.8

On a large site with a deep page hierarchy, users can lose track of where a given page sits relative to the rest of the site. This criterion helps users, particularly those with cognitive disabilities or short-term memory limitations, understand their current location so they can navigate up, down, or across the site's structure with confidence rather than relying purely on the browser back button.

How to Meet It

Provide a breadcrumb trail showing the path from the home page to the current page. Alternatively or additionally, highlight the current section in the primary navigation menu (e.g. with `aria-current="page"` and a distinct visual style), show the current location on a sitemap, or reflect the page's place in the hierarchy in the page title.

Code Examples

INCORRECT
<nav aria-label="Breadcrumb">
  <a href="/">Home</a> /
  <a href="/products">Products</a> /
  <a href="/products/widgets">Widgets</a>
</nav>
CORRECT
<nav aria-label="Breadcrumb">
  <a href="/">Home</a> /
  <a href="/products">Products</a> /
  <a href="/products/widgets" aria-current="page">Widgets</a>
</nav>

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a descriptive page title (2.4.2) enough to satisfy this criterion on its own?

It can contribute, but a title alone typically only conveys the current page, not its place within the broader site hierarchy. A breadcrumb trail or a highlighted current-section indicator in navigation more directly communicates location relative to the rest of the site, which is the intent of this criterion.

What does aria-current='page' actually do for assistive technology?

It tells screen readers and other assistive technology that this particular link represents the page the user is currently on, so it can be announced differently (e.g. as 'current page') from the other breadcrumb or navigation links, reinforcing location without relying on visual styling alone.
