3.2.6 Consistent Help

If a web page contains help mechanisms repeated across multiple pages, they occur in the same relative order on each page, unless a change is initiated by the user.

Understanding 3.2.6

New in WCAG 2.2, this criterion requires that when a set of pages provides help features (contact details, a live chat launcher, an FAQ link, a help/support link), those mechanisms appear in the same relative order across pages. This lets users, especially those with cognitive disabilities, reliably find help without hunting for it anew on every page. Users repositioning a help widget themselves (for example, dragging a chat launcher) does not violate this criterion; it targets the order the site itself establishes.

How to Meet It

Place help mechanisms (contact details, a chat launcher, a help link, an FAQ link) in a shared location, such as the site header or footer, that appears in the same relative order on every page. If a mechanism like live chat is present on some pages but not others, ensure that wherever it does appear, its position relative to other repeated help content stays consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every page need to include every help mechanism?

No. A help mechanism only needs to appear in a consistent relative order and location on the pages where it is actually present; the criterion does not require every page to include every mechanism.
