2.2.3 No Timing

Timing is not an essential part of the event or activity presented by the content, except for non-interactive synchronized media and real-time events.

Last reviewed: September 9, 2026

Understanding 2.2.3

Some users need substantially more time to read, understand, or physically interact with content than any adjustable timer under 2.2.1 could reasonably accommodate. This top-level AAA criterion removes timing as a factor almost entirely, permitting time constraints only where they are unavoidable: non-interactive synchronized media, which is inherently time-based, and genuine real-time events such as a live auction.

How to Meet It

Do not impose time limits on completing tasks, reading content, or interacting with the page. Where a timed interaction exists today, replace it with a self-paced equivalent, such as manually advanced steps instead of an auto-advancing sequence, or an activity with no expiry. Reserve any remaining time dependency strictly for non-interactive synchronized media playback or genuinely real-time events where an untimed alternative isn't feasible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this differ from 2.2.1 Timing Adjustable?

2.2.1 (Level A) permits time limits as long as users can extend, adjust, or turn them off. 2.2.3 (Level AAA) goes further and disallows timing for essentially all content, permitting it only for non-interactive synchronized media and genuine real-time events where an untimed alternative isn't feasible.

Do security-driven session timeouts have to be removed entirely to meet AAA?

To strictly satisfy 2.2.3, yes, unless the session relates to a genuine real-time event. This is one reason many organizations with real security requirements target AA conformance for authenticated areas rather than AAA, relying instead on 2.2.1's adjustable-timeout requirement.
