3.1.4 Abbreviations

A mechanism for identifying the expanded form or meaning of abbreviations is available.

Last reviewed: September 9, 2026

Understanding 3.1.4

Abbreviations and acronyms are often unfamiliar to readers with cognitive or learning disabilities, people unfamiliar with a specific domain, non-native speakers, or screen reader users who may hear an abbreviation spelled out or mispronounced without context. Providing a way to discover the expanded meaning prevents these users from being blocked by unexplained shorthand.

How to Meet It

Expand the abbreviation at its first occurrence on a page (e.g., "World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)"), link to a definition or glossary entry, or provide a mechanism such as a glossary page reachable from every use of the abbreviation. A single mechanism applied consistently across the site (e.g., a glossary linked from a persistent help menu) can satisfy this for abbreviations used throughout the content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is using the HTML <abbr title="..."> element enough on its own?

It helps, but relying on the title attribute alone is risky since title tooltips are not reliably exposed on touch devices or by all screen readers. Pair it with a first-use expansion or glossary link for a more robust mechanism.
